This song cycle began its life as a standalone setting for soprano and piano of Friedrich Hebbel’s well-known poem Sommerbild (Summer Picture). The second half of the song is pointedly more dramatic than the first half, and there is no obvious explanation for this dramatic ending, other than it simply emerged from the normal working out of the compositional materials. However, the ending suggested to me that this song might be the endpoint in a larger cycle, and the day after the premiere performance, I found the other three texts in the space of one half hour.
